Second Grade Studies Butterflies

Mrs. McPherson's Classroom

April 16, 2008

The second grade students recently studied the development of butterflies in their classroom. Butterfly caterpillars, or larvae, were ordered from California. They arrived in their classroom on April 4. The students began a journal that tracked the stages of development. Each day the caterpillars were measured and observed. The amount of food that was eaten by the caterpillars was also noted. After about ten days the caterpillars entered into the next stage of their development by forming chrysalids. They remained in this dormant stage for another 7 to 10 days. Finally, on April 21 the butterflies emerged from their chrysalids. The next step was to feed them (sugar water) and watch them eat. After watching the butterflies for a few days the class released them outside. Everyone has been watching, hoping to see them on the playground!
