A Chance to Save a Life

Red Cross Blood Mobile Travels to Roseland

by Bailey Morris

October 12, 2009

The Red Cross Blood Mobile traveled to Roseland on October 7th, to collect the blood of donors from around the community. The goal for the Silver Lake chapter of FBLA was to accumulate eighty units between this blood drive and the one next spring - which would entitle our students to a $750 scholarship to be shared between two FBLA members.  Unfortunately, we were not close to the halfway point, as we only had 28 productive units of the 32 units presented.  This means that we are looking for many more donors in March!

Students in FBLA sponsor the drive - bringing sloppy joe mix, chips, and desserts - serving the donors food as well as working the blood drive.  In addition to volunteering their time and food, some FBLA members who were the minimum age of 16 also took a seat in the gym and gave blood themselves. The blood mobile was set up from noon to six, and the officers stayed around an extra hour to assist the Red Cross workers in tearing down and loading up the crates of blood, chairs, tables, and anything else that was brought into the Silver Lake gym that day.

Silver Lake FBLA would like to thank everyone who helped out with this drive.  Whether you brought food, helped to set up or tear down, gave blood, or worked, we wouldn’t have accomplished what we did that day without your help!  A special thanks to those who took time out of their day to save a life - we all appreciate it!

The chapter's next drive will be in March, and other upcoming activities to be conducted by the chapter this month are:

    - Ride-Your-Bike-To-School Day on Wednesday, October 14th.

    - Hayrack Ride on October 15th at Jeff and Julie Grabill's home.

    - Elementary Pumpkin Judging on Oct. 29th at Silver Lake Elementary.
