Journalism Students Attend Workshop

Tools & Tricks of the Trade Learned By All Attendees

by Jennifer Mahoney

October 13, 2009

The journalism class attended a workshop at the Ramada Inn on Monday, October 5, 2009. At the seminar they were given many useful tips on how to make future yearbooks better. The students learned about layouts and what type of font groups and pictures go together well. They also got many ideas from other schools that attended.

Laura Schaub of Jostens presented yearbook themes, ideas, and photos from across the United States, and divided the schools into groups to come up with a theme and ideas for division pages to go with the theme. Seven of the nine Journalism students attended Ms. Schaub’s workshop: Bailey Morris, Taylor Ehrman, Brianna Gentert, Ronny Sorensen, Cami Bruckman, Annie Wickham, and Jennifer Mahoney. Lacoln Strasburg and Chloe Gibson were both ill on this date. Senior Cami Bruckman said, “All in all, it was a great day! We learned a lot of information about how to make a good yearbook. We’ll apply a lot of what we learned at the workshop to the yearbook we make this year.”

The workshop proved successful as the students and their sponsor took home lots of new ideas. Mrs Epley, the journalism teacher, summed up the day by saying, “The workshop had some great ideas as far as yearbook themes, divider pages, and how to tie your theme to your school and your ‘message’ about the year. Additionally, there were a lot of examples of other yearbooks shared along with tools in Photo Shop and In Design. I think the students really enjoyed gathering ideas and seeing what other schools had done to come up with this year’s theme.”

The students are busy with developing their own theme, as well as selling ads to local community business members…so if you are interested in seeing your full-color ad in the school yearbook, newsletter, and on our website, please contact our sponsor, Dana Epley, at depley@esu9.org or call her at (402) 756-6611 to support the Journalism class and their production of another outstanding yearbook!
