On Thursday, October 15th, the Silver Lake FBLA members gathered at the school and got ready for a fun-filled night of hayrack rides and s’mores around the campfire. Jeff and Julie Grabill were kind enough to host this event and allow forty-one excited high school students to invade their property from 6:30-8:30 PM again this year.
The night started off with the revealing of Jeff’s giant discovery, an extremely large snapping turtle! Also, living with the snapping turtle in a big tub, was a very long garter snake that gave all of the girls quite a scare! While the boys were impressed, the girls were not quite ready for this “pet” as Jenna called it.
Finally, the kids climbed up on the trailer and sat on the blocks of hay with their coats, gloves, blankets, and anything else they could use to keep them warm. Jeff drove the students and sponsors on a thirty-minute route, while they talked, took pictures, and enjoyed the wonderful Nebraska sunset! On the way back, however, there was a quite pleasant surprise. Jacob Trausch, a neighbor of the Grabills, hid under the bridge and shocked those on board with a beautiful fireworks show that lasted about ten minutes. After lots of loud cheers and applauses, they headed back to the Grabills’ farm to roast hotdogs and s’mores.
With the fire there for warmth, students enjoyed each other’s company and a nice meal! Each FBLA member provided hot dogs, chips, desserts, and pop for the event. The night ended as the students hopped up on the bus, and headed back to the school.
“It was a wonderful night to be on a trailer full of hay. The food was amazing and there were plenty of activities for everyone,” said Silver Lake Junior Sawyer Monroe.
Upcoming events for the chapter are the Elementary Pumpkin Judging on October 29th by the FBLA officers. The chapter also has butterbraid orders are due on Friday, October 23rd, and they will be delivered on Tuesday, November 10th.
