Red Ribbon Week at SLHS Showed Lot's of School Spirit

October 26-30th 2009

November 03, 2009

On Monday, October 26, 2009, Mustangs paid a dollar upon arriving to school to wear their favorite hats and to promote Red Ribbon Week. Hat Day was just the first day to promote being drug-free. In addition to the hats, student council members gave out red ribbons that said, “Say Peace Out to Drugs,” in gold lettering with a big, gold peace sign printed on it. Most students didn’t wear a hat but still paid the dollar fee to promote drug awareness. The students, and teachers, who did wear hats showed off their drug-free spirit and their Mustang fashion sense.
The following day, Tuesday, October 27, it was “Wear Red” day. Students were asked to wear red in support of being drug-free. So naturally, the students donned red attire in spirit with the day. It was a very bright day in the fight against drugs, and from the looks of things, the Mustang students won the war on drugs on Tuesday!
Finally, on Wednesday, October 28, it was time to celebrate Halloween! The Silver Lake students were encouraged to dress up in their costumes for Halloween. No hats or masks were permitted, but the outfits ranged from M&M’s to gypsies to superheroes and impersonations of the famously dead! These Mustangs really enjoyed getting into the spirit of Halloween as it has been years since we have dressed up for the occasion – since elementary school for some! The last hour of school was spent playing games in the gym and Halloween-related games in the art room for candy prizes with all events being sponsored by Student Council.
The week was ended on Thursday, October 29, with a pep-rally to congratulate and cheer-on the boys, who played in the first-round of State Football Playoffs. The senior football and volleyball players shared words of wisdom with the underclassmen. “You are the future, little ones,” Connor Hansen spoke to the crowd as he got a laugh and a smile out of everyone. Senior players Jared Rathje and Nate Kosse initiated a “blood-brothers” bonding circle with head football coach Mr. Iverson, helping to keep the “pack” strong. There was a cheer-off and scream-off to end the day with the seniors coming out victorious (though most of us agree that the freshmen won!). All in all, it was a fun-filled week that won’t long be forgotten.
Thank you to our Student Council members and Mrs. Hinrichs for sponsoring the events from Monday through Wednesday, and to the cheerleaders and Mrs. Mousel for the pep rally on Thursday. It was nice to see so much school spirit shown throughout the entire week.
