Silver Lake High School students who complete Art I, Art II, Art III, and Art IV will now be eligible to receive up to six free college credits from Central Community College through the High School Articulation Program. This program, formerly known as Tech Prep, allows students who have completed designated classes with an A or B average in high school to earn college credit through CCC. SLHS art teacher Trish Hinrichs met with college officials to determine if the art program currently taught meets the requirements for articulation and she was pleased to find out that indeed it does.
Mrs. Hinrichs stated, “The credits that Silver Lake students can earn by taking the art classes are Drawing 1.1, Introduction to Printmaking , Oil & Acrylic Painting 1.1, Introduction to Photography, Ceramics 1.1, and Introduction to Digital Photography."
In addition to receiving commercial art and media arts credits, Silver Lake students can also receive college credit by taking Digital Media, Accounting I, and Accounting II. By earning an A or B in Digital Media, students will earn the first credit of Multimedia Design from CCC. By earning an A or B in Accounting I and Accounting II, students will earn three credits each for Small Business Accounting and Principles of Accounting I.
Students have several advantages by participating in High School Articulation (Tech Prep) classes. They can get an early start towards earning college credits at CCC. They can also save money, as each credit would cost $73 if they had to pay for it. “With this arrangement, it would not be out of the question for a Silver Lake student to save hundreds of dollars towards tuition at Central Community College.” stated guidance counselor Chris Sluka.
Trish Hinrichs, Dana Epley, and Keith Crowe are the instructors in the High School Articulation program.
