Basketball Seasons Begin at SLHS

With the volleyball and football seasons at a close, athletes at Silver Lake are busy preparing for their next tough sports season. The basketball teams held their first practice on Monday, November 16. This year, with new teams came new coaches. Terry Bauer, who has been the assistant boys basketballcoach under Chris Sluka for the past two years, has now stepped up to head coach. Along with a new head coach, Nathan Dietz stepped in to be the new assistant coach for the boys. The girls’ coaching staff saw some changes, too. While Keith Crowe has been the head coach for the girls’ team for seventeen years, Greg Iverson is now the assistant coach, filling the vacancy left by Shannon Lovin.
After losing five lettering seniors from last year, the Mustang boys reload with six seniors, half of which are returning letterwinners or starters. Kevin Hall, Connor Hansen, Nate Kosse, Luis Perez, Jared Rathje, and Ronny Sorensen look forward to leading this team of twenty-eight through an action-packed schedule.

Coach Bauer commented on his team by saying, “I really look for this group to surprise a lot of people. They are going to be extremely fun to watch. Practices have been very intense and well-executed to this point. Looking at the boys during practice, I really feel that this large group has a chance to be very special; that goes for varsity, junior varsity, and C-team.”

The girls are extremely excited to fulfill their goals of being undefeated and returning to the State Basketball Tournament to finish what they started. “I am very excited to get the basketball season started,” said Head Coach Keith Crowe. “I have been ready to go since we walked off the floor of the Devaney Center last year. We have many talented and experienced players returning this season with other players ready to step up to add depth. Our opponents and TVC will be tough again this year, but I have confidence that we will be very competitive with all the teams on our schedule. Our motto for this season is ‘Faith, Focus, and Finish.’ Faith in each other, focus on each opponent, and finish each game.” Seniors Cami Bruckman, Jenna Grabill, Chloe Gibson, Carmi Grigg, Shelby Rupprecht, and Kayla Timm will be leading the Lady Mustangs as they step onto the hardwood this season.

Come out and support both of these teams as they open their season to Deshler, a tough conference rival, on December 4th on their home court in Roseland. Junior varsity games begin at 4 p.m. Good luck, Mustang players and coaches!
