Mustangs Lose Tough Battle to Raiders

Silver Lake Boys Drop to 6-8 on the Season

by Dana Epley

February 01, 2010

The Silver Lake Mustang boys team played their last regular season game before the Conference Tournament on Friday, January 29th, and were defeated by the Lawrence/Nelson Raiders. The Mustangs kept it close the first half, despite going 0-8 from the 3 point line, and shooting only 25% from the field. They headed into the break with only a 2-point deficit.

However, the Raiders came out ready to play and scored 20 points in the third quarter compared to the Mustangs’ 12 points. They were unable to catch up and outscore the Raiders in the last period, and because of this, were down 50-35 when the final buzzer rang.

Here is what first year head coach Terry Bauer had to say about the game: “We couldn’t put the ball in the basket. We shot 26% from the field, 6% from 3 point land, and 33% from the charity stripe. If we shoot that poorly, we will not be able to win games. If someone would have told them before the game that we would hold them to 18 points in the first half and 50 points for the game I would have guessed that we would have come out on the winning side. Our shooting has got to improve, and we are excited for the opportunity to get back to work in the Conference Tournament.”

Junior Tyler Ostrander led the Mustangs with 10 points and brought down 8 rebounds. Junior Sawyer Monroe put up 6 points along with freshman Catarino Perez stepped up and played great defense for the Mustangs. Senior Nate Kosse led the team in rebounds with 9, while Monroe was able to jump up and grab 7 rebounds.

The Mustangs are seeded 5th in the Twin Valley Conference Tournament, and will face the No. 4 Blue Devils of Kenesaw in Kenesaw on February 2nd. The consolation and championship games are held in Doniphan. Go Mustangs!
