Lady Mustangs Win Conference for Third Year in a Row

Improving Record to 18-0

February 10, 2010

The Silver Lake Lady Mustangs have done it again. Two years ago, the ladies in maroon and silver won their first ever conference title in school history in the sport of basketball. Last year (2008-2009), they became again to be the back-to-back TVC champs. This year, they wanted to defend that title and did just that. The Lady Mustangs are now the three-time defending Twin Valley Conference Champs.

As the first seed in the first round match-up, Silver Lake was set to play Red Cloud at home. The Lady Mustangs were on top the whole game, winning easily with a final score of 50 to 20. They had a great offensive game, shooting 48.9% from the field. Kayla Timm led in scoring with 13 and also grabbed 8 rebounds. Chloe Gibson and Bailey Morris each had 9 points and 3 rebounds, while Morris also added 3 assists and 7 steals. Shelby Rupprecht put up 7 points and pulled down 4 rebounds. Carmi Grigg, Cami Bruckman, and Jenna Grabill all chipped in 4 points apiece, while Bruckman dished out 6 total assists.

For the semi-finals, the Lady Mustangs saw themselves taking on the Shelton Lady Bulldogs. Silver Lake came out strong in the first half, outscoring the Bulldogs 38 to 14 and shooting 56% from field goal range. Things slowed down just a little the second half, but Silver Lake won with a final score of 36 to 65 and would move on to the championship game. Morris led the team with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Bruckman had 11 points for the game, along with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Rupprecht and Timm were right behind with 9 points while Rupprecht also grabbed 7 rebounds and Timm had 5. Gibson led the team in rebounds with 10 and also chipped in 7 points.

After defeating Shelton, Silver Lake was set to take on the Lawrence/Nelson Raiders for the gold. For the Lady Mustangs, it was one of the lowest-scoring games they have played all year, but their defense won them the game. Silver Lake walked away with a 29 to 17 win, improving their record to 18-0. Rupprecht was the leader in points with 8 and also grabbed 9 rebounds. Morris, Bruckman, and Timm all added in 6 points. 5’2 Morris led the team in rebounds with 11 and dished out 3 assists. Bruckman and Timm both had 6 rebounds, along with Bruckman’s 3 assists. Gibson chipped in 3 points and had 7 rebounds.

“I am very proud of the girls for winning the third conference tournament in a row.  We had more pressure on us coming in as the top seed and the favorite.  The girls did a great job of staying focused and taking it one game at a time and not looking ahead,” said Coach Keith Crowe. Congrats to the Lady Mustangs and good luck as you take on the Shelton Bulldogs next for the title of regular season TVC champs. The girls’ last home game will be on Thursday, February 11th against the Giltner Hornets, before beginning sub-district action on Tuesday, February 16th, as they have a bye for the first round of action on the 15th.
