FBLA Week
Silver Lake Celebrates FBLA Appreciation Week
by Bailey Morris
February 18, 2010
The week of February 8th brought many “Thank You’s” and “Be Mine’s” to the school of Silver Lake. That week, its FBLA chapter honored the professionalism of all future business leaders, the staff of Silver Lake, and the “crushes” of everyone in the Silver Lake district.
On Monday, February 8th, the students dressed up as professional business people to recognize the hardworking “businessmen” in our world today. There are many people out there who spend their time in offices or “behind the scenes” all day and they don’t receive the acknowledgement they deserve for all of their hard work.
Following the dress-up day, the FBLA officers held a teacher appreciation breakfast on Tuesday at both the high school and the elementary school. The students felt it was necessary to show their gratitude and thank their teachers for all the hard work, time, and effort they give to the students throughout the year. The officers were asked to bring breakfast casseroles, fruit platters, and different kinds of juices as a way to say “thank you” to the teachers for all that they do.
Also, all week long, “crush can” orders were being brought in to Mrs. Epley to celebrate Valentine’s Day early. For those of you who aren’t sure exactly what a “crush can/candy” is, allow me to explain. Let’s face it...we all have “crushes.” Anyone in the community could send the pre-school, elementary or jr. - sr. high school students or staff members a can of pop or bag of candy - either anonymously or with a personalized message. The cost was one dollar per item, with an extra dollar being paid to remain anonymous. Many kids sent out cans or candy bags to their friends and wrote a little note with an inside joke or a certain “saying” used frequently in their conversations. This year was extremely successful, as FBLA put together around 400 crush cans and/or candy bag orders - with everyone in the elementary and high school receiving something.
The chapter and their sponsor would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made “FBLA Week” a success! The chapter is now preparing for the State Leadership Conference in April where the officers and 13 other members will take tests and participate in activities at the conference in Omaha from April 8th - 10th, 2010. Wish the chapter luck in qualifying another member(s) for the National Leadership Conference for the third year in a row!
