February 18, 2010

It’s finally here. That time of year where all those tough practices and nail-biting games come into play. Anything can happen. This is the part of the season with the most upsets and heartbreaks, but the Silver Lake Lady Mustangs are determined not to be one of those teams that get defeated without first making a trip to Lincoln. On Tuesday, February 16th, the team traveled up to Grand Island Central Catholic High School for the second round of Sub-District action to take on the Lady Tigers of Palmer High School. Propelled by a quick start, the Mustangs were able to hold off the Tigers to take the game by the score of 78-34.
Fired up that the post season is actually here, the girls made an eight minute decision to run and gun on this Palmer team, jumping out to a 23-4 lead when the 1st quarter buzzer sounded. The Mustangs played a perfect defensive game in the 2nd period, holding the Tigers to zero points, while the ‘Stangs scored sixteen! The two teams headed into the locker room with the score at 39-8.
The Mustangs came out ready to play in the second half, shooting 58% from the field. Heading into the fourth quarter with an eighteen point lead, the girls were confident that they would pull away with a win. The Tigers showed persistence in the final quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 16-15. Even so, the ladies managed to stay on top and walk off the court with their 21st win of the season - and the start of their new post-season.
Leading the Mustangs with 17 points was senior Kayla Timm, while seniors Cami Bruckman and Shelby Rupprecht each tallied up 15 points and 7 rebounds, while junior Bailey Morris added 11 points. Senior Chloe Gibson put up 7 points and brought down 5 rebounds. Morris led in steals with 6 and assist leaders included Bruckman and Morris, who each had 5.
The Mustangs are scheduled to face the winner of the Harvard and High Plains game on Thursday, February 18th, at Grand Island Central Catholic High School at 7 p.m. for the Sub-District Championship. Good Luck, Lady Mustangs!
