On Wednesday, February 24, 2010, the Silver Lake Speech Team headed to Harvard for the Twin Valley Conference Speech Meet. Mustangs in tow were: freshman Nikki Blumenthal and junior Andy Jones in entertainment speaking; freshmen Keenan Danehey and Cat Perez in extemporaneous speaking; sophomore Annie Wickham in poetry; senior Jennifer Mahoney in informative; freshman Jenna Thayer in persuasive speaking; and juniors Jacob Trausch and Cole Mangers in duet acting.
The Mustang’s speeches in question were all very well thought out and varied. Nikki Blumenthal’s speech was about her theory on why girls go to the bathroom together. Andy Jones had a speech about the strange music we listen to today. Annie Wickham read poetry about fairytale creatures while Jennifer Mahoney informed people all about M&Ms. Jenna Thayer tried to persuade people about why having cheerleaders and supporting them is important to a school. Jacob Trausch and Cole Mangers played a golf teacher and his more than eccentric student in Golf Doctor. Cat Perez’s first extemporaneous speech was on India’s nuclear program and his speech for the finals round was on cell phone usage while driving.
Annie Wickham had this to say about the meet: “I definitely could have done better. There was a lot of amazing competition though and I learned a lot for next time.”
Congratulations to Cat Perez for making it to finals and placing 6th in the competition. Cole Mangers, Jacob Trausch and Annie Wickham also received superior ratings in their categories. Good luck to the team as they head into the District competition on March 9 at Ansley, Nebraska.
