Elementary Students Participate

March 08, 2010

The Silver Lake students and staff participated in activities to celebrate Read Across America Week and the birthday of a favorite author, Dr. Seuss.  Each day was celebrated by a different theme.  On Monday our theme was:  Aim High - The World is Your Stage.  The students were encouraged to dress like a movie star.  You may have caught a glimpse of Hannah Montana, Brad Pitt, or maybe even a Disney princess walking through our halls.  The elementary students also enjoyed a visit from some very special guests.  The top Accelerated Reader students from the high school performed some reader’s theaters for our students.  High school students performing were:  Janessa Gomez, Carmi Grigg, Mackenzie Skupa, Kaitlyn Schneider, McKenna Erickson, and Megan Blumenthal.  These young ladies shared their experiences and inspired the elementary students by sharing how many AR points they have accumulated.  On Tuesday our theme was:  Tip Your Hat To Our Hometown Heroes.  Many of the students and staff were wearing their favorite hats.  Some of our very own hometown heroes came to visit our elementary students to share with them why reading is so important.  These special guests also read some of their favorite books to the students.  Our visiting hometown heroes were:  Arlo Thayer, Steve Skupa, Dennis Timm, Jeff Grabill, Daren Neimeyer, Maddie Thurston, and our very own Mr. Arntt.  After enjoying some very good books the students and guests played an “Alphabet Race” in which Mr. Arntt’s team were victorious.  Our final theme was:  Team Up For Reading.  On this day the Silver Lake students and staff wore school colors in support of our hometown team.  The week was wrapped up by attending a pep rally in support of our Lady Mustangs as they began their journey to the state basketball tournament.
