Silver Lake Boys Basketball Season Comes to an End

Red Hornets Too Much For Mustangs: 43 to 62 Loss

On Tuesday, February 21st, the Silver Lake Mustangs boys basketball team traveled to Hastings St. Cecilia to take on the Heartland Lutheran Red Hornets in the second round of Class D2-7 Sub-Districts. The winner of this game would take on the Giltner Hornets on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012, at St. Cecilia. The Mustangs lost 43 to 62 to the Red Hornets after playing an excellent first half.

The team jumped ahead of the Red Hornets with a few quick baskets and led by seven at the end of the first quarter: 18 to 11. The Mustangs continued to battle throughout the second quarter, but allowed the Red Hornets to take the lead: 30 to 26.

The second half didn't fare well for the Mustangs as the first half took a lot out of them. With shots not falling for the Mustangs, Heartland Lutheran was able to outscore the Mustangs big with a 24 to 8 run in the third, ending the quarter with a lead of 38 to 50 in the Red Hornets' favor. The fourth quarter found the Mustangs holding the Red Hornets to 12, but were only able to score 5 themselves, which left the team with a loss and an end to their season: 43 to 62.

Junior Catarino Perez had this to say about the game, "We came out to fight and looking for a win, but we just didn't come out strong enough in the second half which is why Heartland Lutheran came out on top."

The Mustang boys will graduate one senior this year in Colin Smith. The Mustangs will return all five starters which include: freshmen Journey Ericsson and Seyler Monroe and juniors Jaydn Grabill, Zach Polk, and Kasey Johnson. The Mustangs ended the season with a 4-16 record.
