First and Fifth Grade Reading Partners

by Mrs. Karr and Mrs. Koos

December 15, 2009

Twice a week, the first and fifth grade students get together to read. The first grade students read to the fifth grade students. Reading aloud to the fifth grade students allows the first grade students to improve sounding out words for better reading fluency. When reading out loud, the first grade students can hear themselves read. After reading out loud, the fifth grade students ask the first graders questions about their book to help improve the student’s reading comprehension. The students look forward to their time spent together each week.

This week, the first and fifth grade students got together during reading time to share some holiday joy and make some ornaments to adorn the Christmas tree. For this day, the fifth graders were the instructors and taught the first graders. Each fifth grade student got together with a first grade partner to give directions and show how the ornaments would be made. They made icicle ornaments by stringing beads onto pipe cleaners. They also made Christmas balls for the tree. They were decorated brightly with glitter and had their pictures in the middle.

The students enjoy their time together. It is a good learning experience for students in both grade levels. The reading partner program will continue through the school year. Reading is Great!

Enjoy the pictures of the students reading together and making Christmas ornaments.
