With the start of the second semester, the 8th grade Algebra class was given the task of building a structure that would or could hold weight. Groups of students were challenged to build a structure made only of only file folders and masking tape. Some creations involved circles, squares, and other shapes. The minimum requirement of the assignment was to hold at least 25 pounds. Mrs. Heuertz and Mrs. Heldt sponsored this project.
The winning “engineers” were Austin Woodard, McKenna Ericsson, and Matt Wengler as their structure buckled under the weight of 450 lbs. Coming in second was Kaitlin Schneider, Nadine Lovejoy Anthony Struck, and Trevor Pierce. Their creation folded when it hit 425 lbs. In 3rd place, Zac Peterson, Kila Timm, Samantha Fulk, and Alex Jones saw their structure cave under the weight of 320 lbs. In final place with the weight of 145 lbs. was Paige Manglona, Tori Kissell, and Peter Trausch.
This activity was a challenge that was enjoyable. Students had to work together, to problem solve, and to learn from mistakes.
