The second grade class has had an ongoing science project in their classroom since September. The students received a tube of about 25 harvester ants which they placed in an ant farm in their classroom. The students have watched them and learned a lot about the life of ants.
Each ant has a job in the colony, such as the undertaker, who buries the ants as they die. They also learned that they don't need much food or water. The colony was given 5 drops of water every other day. Their food consisted of 1 piece of bread or apple the size of the head of a pin once a week. The class enjoyed learning about the ants and watching the ants make tunnels in the ant farm.
Eventually, all of the ants will die because they can't survive without a queen. Needless to say, the ant farm was a fun project for everyone!
