Silver Lake Speakers Finish Year Strong with Showing at District Meet

by Annie Wickham

March 17, 2010

The small but strong Silver Lake Speech Team headed out extra early on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 to the District Speech Meet held at Ansley. Led by coach Ken Sovereign, members in tow were: senior Jennifer Mahoney in informative speaking;  juniors Andy Jones in entertainment speaking and Cole Mangers and Jacob Trausch in duet acting; sophomore Annie Wickham in poetry; and freshmen Jenna Thayer in persuasive speaking, Nikki Blumenthal in entertainment speaking, and Keenan Danehey and Cat Perez in extemporaneous speaking.

It was a long day - filled with anticipation as the Mustangs presented their speeches in each of their respective categories. The hard work for the year paid off in the end as four members of the Silver Lake Speech Team made it to the finals.

It was all underclassmen in the finals for the Mustangs as Annie Wickham, Jenna Thayer, Cat Perez and Keenan Danehey prepared for another tough round of action in the finals.  Annie Wickham, Jenna Thayer and Cat Perez each placed sixth in their categories.  Keenan Danehey placed third and thus, qualified for the State Speech on Friday, March 19th. Senior Jennifer Mahoney, sophomore Annie Wickham, and freshmen Catarino Perez, Jenna Thayer, and Keenan Danehey all received superior ratings at the meet.

“I think all the young people that we had this year did very well. . . .” stated Speech Coach Ken Sovereign.  The team improved with every meet and have many young contestants with experience under their belts for next year. On a final note, good luck to Keenan at State Speech!
