Jump Start Program a Success at Silver Lake

Students Enjoy School Early

by Kari Sharp

August 10, 2010

Eleven Silver Lake students got a “Jump Start” on the 2010-2011 school year.  Students in grades ranging from third to seventh have attended the first ever Silver Lake Jump Start program.  The school day ran from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. and concentrated on reading and math skills.  The students learned about idioms, multiple meaning words, and homophones, as well as read the novel A Taste of Blackberries.

The students had the opportunity to work on their writing skills through responding to response questions as they read the novel.  Knowing how to put together a good complete sentence and then to build on that to form a good paragraph was the focus.  Students also worked on their reading fluency and comprehension of nonfiction materials concentrating on such skills as sequencing, compare and contrast, and cause and effect.  Math topics covered included:  weight, measurement, capacity, money, time, geometry, fractions, and a review of multiplication facts.  Math centers gave each of the students a hands on experience with the various topics.  The students ended each day with a challenge math question as their homework to figure and bring back.

Mrs. Ewing and Mrs. Sharp really enjoyed working with these eleven eager students:  third graders Makayla Dinkler, Madie Mostek, A.J. Niemeyer; fourth grader Brooke Watts; fifth graders Jamie Berns, Alyssa Schmidt, Mark Thurston; sixth graders Brie Meyer, Wyatt Gomez, and seventh graders Morgan Stromer, Cole Shurigar.
