Boys Basketball Goes 0-2 During Holiday Tournament

Jeffrey Hill

January 09, 2018

Silver Lake hosted their holiday tournament on December 28 and 29.  On Thursday, the Mustangs squared off against the Alma Cardinals with the Cardinals winning 58-44.  Silver Lake was lead in scoring by Mark Thurston with 15 points, Alex Ehrman contributed 13 and Johnny Borgman and Reid Parr had 8.  Coach Maulsby commented, “The team came out with a lot of energy and jumped out to a quick lead.  However, in the second quarter Alma was able to close the gap and take the lead because of some turnovers and lack of execution of the defensive end.  The boys continued to fight to the end, but Alma was able to come out with a victory.”

On December 29, the Mustangs faced off against the Shelton Bulldogs in the consolation game of the holiday tournament.  Shelton jumped out to an early lead and never looked back winning the game 63-56.  Lead by seniors Mark Thurston and Reid Parr, who combined for 44 points, the Mustangs made a last ditch effort at a comeback, but came up a little short.  Alex Ehrman and Johnny Borgman each had six points for the Mustangs.  Senior Mark Thurston had the following to say about their performance: “I feel like I played better than I usually do, at least on the offensive end. We could’ve moved the ball around better on offense and we definitely need to improve all around on defense and being smart with the ball.”  Congratulations to the Exeter-Milligan boys and girls’ basketball teams on winning the Silver Lake Holiday Tournament.
