Learning the Law

Daniel Acosta

January 12, 2018

On January 10 the Civics 12 class and Civics teacher Mr. Maulsby took a trip to the Webster county court office in Red Cloud for County Government Day. The class learned a lot of new information about how the local government works. When they arrived, the class was split into groups based on color along with Blue Hill and Red Cloud. They then visited with each department to get to learn and understand how and why they operate. The class learned things from the three noxious weeds in Webster County to learning how the police respond to emergency situations. After which they kindly provided the students with a delicious lunch right before the game of Jeopardy. All three schools participated and it ended in a very close game. After the game the group got a very nice visit from a K9 unit from the police where they learned more information about how they operate. A few students shared what they found to be the most interesting part of the day. Jeffrey Hill stated, “I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to see the Webster county drug sniffing dog. One fact I learned is that a dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 times better than a human’s.” James Struck stated that a fact he learned is that, “ The Nebraska Extension is partnered with the USDA.”
