On Friday, August 29, 2008, the Silver Lake Jr./Sr. High School band traveled to Lincoln to march at the Nebraska State Fair.
The junior high and high school kids spent the first two weeks
of school preparing for the parade by memorizing their music and
practicing marching in the streets of Roseland during band
class.
The band left the school at around 8:30 in the morning. They were
in Lincoln ready to march by 11:30. When they arrived, the kids
that never marched at the state fair before got “The Warning” to
drink plenty of water and stay away from pop to avoid getting
dehydrated.
The band marched around 11:30, and then again at 1:15. Between marching, the band had time to see and do things at the state fair, not to mention grab a bite to eat. Even though the band was able to roam around during that time, they had to go in groups of at least three to be safe around the fair grounds.
Marching was a good experience for the band, even though it was
very hot outside that day! Betsy Battreall would agree, “It was
very hot at the state fair, but altogether it wasn’t that bad of a
day.” The state fair isn’t a parade that is a huge deal, but it is
a learning experience for the younger kids.
After the long hot day, they all got back on the bus and headed
home in time to watch the Mustang football and volleyball
scrimmages that night.
