4th Grade Hits The Trail
Eighteen Silver Lake fourth graders had the opportunity to attend a field trip to a special kid’s day sponsored by the Oregon Trail Rodeo on Friday, August 24, 2018. Our Silver Lake students got to meet this year’s Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Oregon Trail Rodeo. The rodeo queens shared with the students how they got their start in rodeo and what it takes to b a rodeo queen. They also learned about the history of Nebraska and how rodeo got its start from Ron Meyer, a native to the Roseland area. Mr. Meyer showed them a real buffalo hide and shared some of his artwork with them. The students then traveled from station to station learning about rodeo, the rodeo animals and how well they are cared for and even got to meet the rodeo clown.
The rodeo clown is always a hit with the fourth graders! The students even got the chance to watch come calf roping, steer wrestling, and learn about barrel racing. The students were impressed with the livestock and even got to see some colts that came along with their mamas as they performed as buckin’ broncos in the rodeo. All the fourth graders had a great time!

Lincoln or bust!
On Friday, May 4th the fourth graders excitedly boarded the bus for their field trip to Lincoln. Their first stop was Memorial Stadium. At the stadium, they learned about the consecutive sell-out streak, about our three Heisman trophy winners, and even had the opportunity to run out onto the football field. Although they didn’t get to see the new coach, they were excited to see things like the weight room and jump up to touch the lucky horseshoe as they came out of the tunnel walk.
Our next stop was Morrill Hall and Mueller Planetarium. The kids enjoyed a showing of Weather: Wonders and Mysteries Revealed in the planetarium. The show taught them about extreme weather such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards. After the show, the students had the opportunity to explore Morrill Hall’s exhibits. Among the favorite exhibits were the bizarre beasts and elephant hall.
We finished up the day with a stop at the UNL Dairy Store. The students were shown how the ice cream and cheese was made. The best part of the stop was eating ice cream! Among the favorite favorites were mint chip, blue raspberry, strawberry, french toast and good ol’ vanilla.
