And the Award goes to...

Julie Jones

March 29, 2018

On Thursday, March 22, Silver Lake math teacher Mrs. Heldt traveled to Kearney along with Principal Bauer for what she thought was just going to be a conference at UNK. Little did Mrs. Heldt know, she was actually there to receive an award from the Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association. NRCSA picks from nominees submitted in January for 7 different awards. NRCSA chooses to “honor excellence found in dedicated faculty, administrations, and boards of member schools.” The NRCSA “recognizes those who demonstrate leadership and character in promoting quality education in rural Nebraska” with the 7 awards presented at the Spring Conference. There are 187 member schools in the NRCSA with 29 in the South Central District along with Silver Lake. Mrs. Heldt was chosen to receive the Outstanding Secondary Teacher award out of all NRCSA member schools and nominees.

Mrs. Heldt put her thoughts in on receiving the award and what she thought she was doing at the ceremony: “I was very shocked and honored to receive such an award. Mr. Bauer had told me we were going to a “roundtable discussion” on rural/small schools. I actually thought that was why I was there the entire time until they started reading my award. The administration and school board definitely surprised me with this.” She also added, “When I initially received the award, I was very surprised and taken back by everything. I am very humbled and honored to receive such an award. To receive this award is a direct reflection of the type of school Silver Lake is. Silver Lake has great administrators, school board members and teachers working together to drive this district to be the best. Silver Lake has been my “home away from home” for 14 years now. This school has allowed me to make mistakes, take risks, grow as an educator, and has pushed me to learn new ideas. I feel very fortunate to work for this district for as long as I have.”

Junior Taran Hanson was asked what he thought about Mrs. Heldt receiving the award and commented, “I truly think Mrs. Heldt deserved this award. She is an outstanding math teacher. She is passionate about everything she does and cares about her students and teaching.” Congratulations and thanks go out to Mrs. Heldt for being such a wonderful math teacher and leader throughout her years with Silver Lake.
