Math Counts is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory, and Silver Lake junior high students and sponsor Stacie Heldt traveled to Kearney, NE to attend the annual Math Counts competition at the UNK Student Union, on Wednesday, February 1st, 2012.
The students were chosen for attendance based on a test that was taken prior to their departure. The students' grades in their math classes were taken into consideration when chosen, and were as follows: eighth graders Sydney Parr, Syd Skupa, Randa Klein, Katie Polk, Abby Ehrman, Joslyn Grabill and seventh grader Corey Conway.
They learned the importance of teamwork as they competed in the target, sprint and team rounds of the competition. From 10:00-10:35 A.M. the team competed in the target round. They then had a break with a snack provided. The sprint round was next and lasted from 11:00-11:40 A.M. They then competed in the team round from 11:45-12:15 P.M. Following the competition, the team went out for lunch. Once they were done with lunch, they headed back to the Student Union for the award and announcement ceremony. Overall, the day was a success and they students had a great time. Participant Joslyn Grabill said, "The math questions started out rather easy, but as the day progressed, they just kept getting more difficult. It was a great feeling when you knew the answers!"
The students worked hard, enjoyed the competitiveness, and the day as a whole spent with sponsor Stacie Heldt. Results are yet to be received, but will be available within the next few weeks. Congratulations to the students selected to be on our Silver Lake Math Counts Team!
