Mustangs Show Up Strong at Regional Science Fair

Kassi Jones

March 20, 2019

Silver Lake took 26 students to Hastings College on Tuesday, March 12 for the Regional Science Fair. Students got to go to regionals if the judges at the local science fair thought that the student's projects were good enough and presented well enough for the next level of competition. Students were judged on the organization of their board along with neatness, speaking skills, and overall knowledge about their project. When asked how she thought that the projects have improved from last year science teacher, Kim Bonifas said “The quality of the science fair projects from Silver Lake students has improved tremendously from last year to this year.  The students are more familiar with the scientific method, and this has helped them to develop a research idea, collect and analyze data, and draw conclusions from their data.” In the Junior division, the judges chose six people to move on to the State Science Fair, held at Nebraska Wesleyan. Silver Lake sent on three of the six students in the Junior division. These students were Samantha Bonifas, Rehgan Miller, and Madison Karr. Six students were also chosen for the High School Division to participate in the State Science Fair. Johnny Borgman will be representing himself and Silver Lake in the High School Division. Bonifas also had added, “Mrs. Curlo and I are extremely proud of how the regional science fair participants represented Silver Lake, and it’s an honor for our school to have four projects move on to the State Science Fair at Nebraska Wesleyan on April 11th.” Students who are moving on to State will compete on Thursday, April 11. Congratulations to all students moving on to the State Science Fair!
