It was Mustangs all the way when the Silver Lake volleyball team swept McCool Junction on their home court in Roseland. Senior captain Makayla Dinkler described the energy in the gym on Thursday as exciting and energetic. Dinkler says, “We wanted to show the crowd what we could accomplish.” The junior varsity team started the night out strong, winning their first two sets in a best of three match. The team rallied to hang on in the second set, to end the game with an ace serve from freshman Marissa Erickson, winning 25-13, 25-21.

The young varsity team relied on defense to get their momentum flowing to win 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 in the best of five match. Picking up 66 digs, the team held McCool Junction to only 16 kills on the night. Sophomore captain Katelyn Karr led the team with 16 digs, abling setters sophomore Amanda Ehrman and junior Kerigan Karr to move the ball around and get the offense going. Ehrman earned a double-double in the first game of the season, with 15 assists and 10 digs. Ehrman shrugged her shoulders with that news, saying, “It’s not about individual stats; the only stats that matter are team stats.” She says, “I couldn’t get those assists without the hitters getting kills.” Led by freshman outside hitter Georgi tenBensel with 11 kills, the Mustangs found success in their offense, tallying 35 kills for the three sets. When the last set of the night touched freshman Brooklyn Meyer’s hand, the gym was already erupting in cheers, knowing it was a game-winner. The Mustangs look ahead to their tournament on Saturday morning in Axtell. Dinkler says, “We have to take it one game at a time and continue to improve each day.”
