Lady Mustangs Pick Up Two Wins on Home Court

Kate Baker

September 04, 2019

Before stepping on the court on Tuesday evening, the word that was ingrained in the Mustang volleyball players’ minds was “out.” Head coach Jenn tenBensel said, “The goal for the night was to “out” our opponents; out hustle, out work, out play, out think and out last! I think all 15 of our girls did a tremendous job at exceeding our expectations! We were aiming to play our game and not our opponents; they did an outstanding job at that!”  Serving was a huge determining factor in the two wins the Lady Mustangs earned in the triangular against Heartland Lutheran and Harvard, bettering their record to 4-2 on the year. The Mustangs scored 22 points in the four sets on aces alone, led by sophomore Amanda Ehrman with seven aces. In the first game of the evening, the Mustangs trampled the Harvard Cardinals with set scores 25-22 and 25-11. The Mustangs struggled to find the floor with their hitting to start the night, which kept the Cardinals in the game. However, freshman Georgi tenBensel got the Mustangs started, putting down 9 of the 25 team kills. Sophomore Katelyn Karr and tenBensel kept the ball alive, picking up 9 digs each and junior Kerigan Karr led the team in assists with 11 of the 18 team assists.

To end the three game night, the Mustangs downed the Red Hornets from Heartland Lutheran in two sets. The Mustang defense was hot, with Katelyn Karr leading the herd with 8 digs, holding the Hornets to just 8 kills. Offensively, Ehrman and Kerigan Karr moved the ball around, enabling threats from all hitters. Junior Seirra Watts-Hofstetter, freshman Brooklyn Meyer, and Ehrman all tallied 4 kills while tenBensel added 6 herself. The Mustangs have a week break before travelling to Blue Hill to take on the Bobcats on September 10.
