Out With The Old, In With The New

Luke Swanson

September 06, 2019

Starting on April 28th, 2019, the process of building a new elementary school in Bladen had begun. Construction crews started the process by demolishing the old three-story building. When asked about the process, Kim Bonifas said “It was sad to see the old building emptied and torn down, and I was sentimental during that time. As soon as the concrete was poured for the new building, that sadness was replaced with excitement and anticipation for the new building.” For several months, there was no school building for the students to attend. The elementary students have been temporarily moved to the Webster County fairgrounds for the remainder of the 2018-2019 school year along with the fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students ending their year at the high school. Construction crews worked hard all summer to try and get the new building ready for the 2019-2020 school year. On September 3rd, the students and staff were able to move into one half of the new establishment. The students will occupy half of the building, while construction crews work hard to finish the other half hopefully by December. “The elementary students and staff have much need space and better safety and security. This should help the learning environment and allow teachers to do more engaging activities. It will also benefit our high school activities by providing a climate-controlled gymnasium, new locker rooms, and concession stand. There are many ways it will benefit our community. People will be able to gather in the commons at games, concerts, and other school events.” commented Superintendent Mr. Cumpston. The Silver Lake community is excited to finish the long-awaited project!
