Hot Start Isn't Enough for Mustangs

Ryan Behmer

November 01, 2019

On the final regular season game for the Mustang football team, a hot start wasn’t enough to outlast the Heartland Lutheran Red Hornets.  Silver Lake was able to jump out to a big lead, but couldn’t finish as the Red Hornets were able to capture a come-from-behind win to close out the season for the Mustangs.  The game began with Oakley Rosno’s “catch a dump” pass from Jake Knehans on the 3rd offensive play for the Mustangs and zigzagging 31 yards to the endzone. The Red Hornets were able to respond on their first offensive possession and tie the game up, 8-8. The Red Hornet’s score didn’t slow down the Mustang offense.  Oakley Rosno found the endzone on the next possession with a 24-yard scramble to bring the score to 16-6. Heartland Lutheran’s next offensive possession couldn’t gain any momentum back and the Mustang defense was able to force a 4 and out, and get the ball on the 40-yard line. On Silver Lake’s 3rd offensive possession, the Red Hornet defense stiffened up.  Silver Lake was forced to make small gains but still was able to move the ball down the field. The result was still more of the same with Oakley Rosno throwing a touchdown pass to Canyen Jameson from 15 yards out. The 1st quarter scoring parade continued with Silver Lake recovered an onside kick to set up their 4th touchdown of the 1st quarter. This time the touchdown came by way of Rosno tossing a 20-yard touchdown to Jake Knehans.  The score after the first quarter ended was Silver Lake 30, Heartland Lutheran 6. In the second quarter, both defenses tightened up and only allowed a touchdown each. The biggest play to occur in the second half was Rosno receiving a crushing hit that resulted in him missing most of the second half. The score at halftime, Silver Lake 36- Heartland Lutheran 13. With Rosno out for most of the second half, the Mustang offense struggled to make plays.  The Red Hornets were able to capitalize with the absence of Rosno and outscore the Mustangs 34-6 in the second half. The final score going in Heartland’s favor. Heartland Lutheran Red Hornets 48- Silver Lake Mustangs 42.
